Several species of intestinal spirochetes of the genus Brachyspira have the potential to cause diarrhoea and retarded growth in animals, most notably in pigs. In recent years, the potential role of these organisms to cause intestinal disease also in other animals like birds and dogs, and even humans has been recognized.
