Research on spirochetes was initiated in Sweden in 1992 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the National Veterinary Institute. The aim was mainly to improve the routine diagnostics of pig diarrhoea.
So far the efforts have resulted in five Ph.D. dissertations and a large number of scientific articles, book chapters, reviews and congress presentations.
Current research activities of the group are focused on diagnostics, epidemiology, phylogeny, pathogenicity, host response and antibacterial resistance associated with spirochete infections in pigs, birds, dogs, cattle, rodents and humans.
